    »War and Peace« is the motto of the Hamburg International Music Festival 2024, with Hamburg’s orchestras and top-class international guests once again putting together a varied programme over five weeks for the glittering season finale.

    : Richard Wagner: The »Walküre«

    »Hojotoho!« is the cry when the eponymous mounted warriors make their grand entrance in Richard Wagner’s »Walküre«. Kent Nagano and the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra present the opera in concert with a historical sound.

  • 2 – 9 June

    : Messian: St. François d’Assise

    The life of St Francis of Assisi, magnificently set to music by Olivier Messiaen: this opera closes the Musikfest with a spectacular production featuring the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra, Kent Nagano and Anna Prohaska as the Angel.

    : The Naghash Ensemble Armenia

    The »Songs of Exile« combine medieval Armenian poems and traditional Armenian rhythms and melodies with neoclassical sounds full of energy. Wandering, being a stranger and the (im)possibility of arriving, moulded into touching music.

    : Voces Suaves / Capricornus Consort Basel

    In his »Madrigals of War and Love«, Monteverdi alternates between war dramas and tales of love and passion. This masterpiece between Renaissance and Baroque is performed by two top early music ensembles with a high-calibre cast.

    : Musical reading: »Humanity at war«

    When star baritone Thomas Quasthoff reads from letters from the First World War in a sonorous voice, the authors seem to come alive again. Enthusiasm, fear, hope and even humour are impressively framed by the piano trio.

  • 20 – 30 June

    : Martha Argerich Festival

    To mark the end of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra’s season, star pianist Martha Argerich is inviting as artist-in-residencenumerous musical friends to take part in her festival throughout the city. Three concerts take place in the Elbphilharmonie.

    : Subscription »Chamber Music at the Laeiszhalle«

    Four concerts with some of the top soloists of our time: stars like Antoine Tamestit, Alexandre Kantorow and exciting all-star ensembles perform masterpieces of chamber music in the intimate setting of the Laeiszhalle Recital Hall.

    : Pierre-Laurent Aimard & Symphoniker Hamburg

    Pierre-Laurent Aimard is one of the best pianists of our time and is recognised for his subtle playing. With the Symphoniker Hamburg, he plays Bartók's Second Piano Concerto, which invites to virtuoso music-making.

    : Panorama der Renaissance

    Music brings comfort – this is as true today as it was during the Thirty Years’ War in the 17th century. With viols, organ, harp and voice, soprano Dorothee Mields and the Hathor Consort present a sound panorama from Heinrich Schütz and contemporaries.

    The Portuguese sense of life in Hamburg: Fado star Mariza presents her new album »Amor« with her band.

    Creative, flexible and unforgettable: the Elbphilharmonie Soundtracker brings a very special project to schools. On four dates, school pupils create their own work and learn all the basics about rhythm, improvisation and much more.

    When war breaks out in Antonia’s homeland, she must say goodbye to her best friend and emigrate: to the rail station, through wild Atlantic storms and to the land of freedom. A magical concert film without words, featuring music by Vivaldi and Dvořák.
